I just saw the trailer for a new film, “Waiting For “Superman,” which looks compelling and heart-wrenching at the same time. From Davis Guggenheim (An Inconvenient Truth), comes a film about the current state of the US public education system and how it is failing. Seriously. It follows five different kids from diverse families and neighborhoods as they try to succeed in a system that determines futures by lotteries and budget whims. A system that has the US ranked 20th and 21st in Math and Science in the world; a system that is set to have a lower rate of literacy this generation than in the previous generation. This information is not new, but like a few other films, looks poised to be a call to action. I hope for an educational revolution. I will make sure to review the film when it comes out, which is scheduled for September 24, 2010.
